Aaron Finch, who leads the Australian side in the white-ball formats, is back on track and would be fit for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. Finch sustained an injury on his right knee due to which he had to undergo a surgery.
Cricket Australia said that the operation to repair the damaged cartilage took place in Melbourne on Thursday and the recovery period is expected to be 8-10 weeks long. However, Finch should be available for the upcoming ICC tournament.
The World Cup was moved from India to UAE under COVID-19 scare. The BCCI is still the host of the tournament in UAE. It is scheduled to take place between October-November just after the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Alex Carey took over the captaincy duties for the remainder of the West Indies tour (after Finch’s injury). Later, Matthew Wade was named captain for the Australia tour of Bangladesh, which was a setback for the team as they lost the T20 series by 4-1.
Australia has never won the T20 World Cup title. They were the runners-up in the 2010 edition of the tournament held in West Indies and lost to England in the final.
