Chennai Super Kings – Auction 2022 Analysis

It was a typical Chennai Super Kings at the IPL Mega Auction 2022 as they continued to do the same and retain their core players and few new names as well. However the CSKians will miss the South African opener Faf Du Plessis who has been bought by RCB for 7CR. They also missed on Shardul Thakur. But yet they managed to get Rayudu, Deepak Chahar, Uthappa, Santner and others.

Lets look at the Strengths and Weakness and a Probable playing 11

1. Managed to get quite a core winning team back.
2. Addressed the middle order woe or inconsistency by including Shivam Dube who can finish innings along with Ravindra Jadeja and also opens up bowling option.
3. Plenty of all round options and depth in batting with Jadeja, Moeen, Dube, Pretorius, Bravo, Santner which
carry tons of international experience and the latest entrant in that list is Chahar through his recent
performances and should be rewarded with a promotion up the order.
4.Uthappa and Rayadu bring in strength to the batting order with their vast and rich IPL experience and being on the champion sides. They have the experience to score big in crucial junctures but what remains crucial to the overall balance of the team is their fitness and being able to contribute through both bat and fielding.

1. Dismantling the most successful opening pair of the previous edition, Gaikwad and FAF will prove to be costly. CSK could have retained FAF to maintain the core team. Opening pair of Ruturaj and Uthappa/Conway will need to repeat the heroics of the opening pair of CSK of the 2021 edition.
2. Dwayne Bravo’s fitness concerns will hurt the winning combination as he ha been a match winner for most of the matches of CSK through his phenomenal death bowling and big blows towards the end either batting first or while chasing.

3. Death bowling will remain a huge concern ahead of CSK. Apart from Bravo, rest everybody remains unproven. Will Bravo be able to play all the league matches? That itself is a big question ahead of CSK management. Chris Jordan can most probably fit into the shoes of Bravo, either both of them playing together or else Jordan in place of Bravo.
4. Will need to experiment in first few matches to get the winning combination. Opening pair- Ruturaj/Uthappa or Ruturaj/Conway and bowling trio- Bravo/Milne/Chahar or Jordan/Milne/Chahar or Bravo/Jordan/Chahar.
5. Inexperienced Indian pace line up
6. Weak pace department

Noteworthy Purchases

1. Devon Conway
2. Dwaine Pretorius
3. Rajvardhan Hangargekar
4. Shivam Dube
5. Chris Jordan

Unworthy purchases

  1. Deepak Chahar (only because of the price tag which I don’t feel justified; if he gets the swing he is lethal otherwise ordinary; the batting prowess may justify the price tag if he is promoted up the order)
  2. Ambati Rayadu (only fitness issue and question of continuation for how many seasons)
  3. Robin Uthappa (only fitness issue and question of continuation for how many seasons)

Overall verdict

CSK has been such a team which never boasts off the presence of power hitters or match winners but rather the solid team play. The team management has been most often criticized for picking up old talents over new lads thereby taking the average age of the team way above other teams. This year’s auction was also nothing much different for them picking up old talents but at the end picked up few young good all round options. Dhoni is known for utilising his players well and this year also he can hope for the same. May be I don’t think they would be able to defend the title this year. But I wish the team good luck.

My ratings 8/10.
