Last season was not the best of the campaigns for Chennai Super Kings and their fans as the yellow army finished 7th on the points table and did not qualify for the playoffs. That was their first league stage exit since the inception of the tournament.

Dhoni’s words after their league stage exit:

“We need to slightly change our core group and look for the next 10 years. At the start of the IPL, we made a team and it served well. There comes a time where you have to shift a bit, hand it over to the next generation.”

“We’ll come back stronger, that’s what we are known for. It was a difficult campaign. We committed a lot of errors. The last four games were a template of where we would like to be.”

And yes, as he promised CSK is back with a bang. His leadership has been instrumental for the 360 degrees turn around in this edition. They did not tweak their core group much but introduced few new faces and kept faith and backed players which did wonders for them.

In yesterday’s game against the league stage’s table-toppers Delhi Capitals we saw the glimpses of the vintage Dhoni ‘The Finisher,’ taking the responsibility as the captain and coming ahead of in-form Jadeja. The move paid off as ‘Thala’ scored 18 runs of 6 deliveries making sure they got through to the finals in style by ensuring a direct entry without the need of the eliminator.

One thing for sure is, whether in form or not, he still gives us goosebumps while he is on the field taking on the opposition. He receives cheers for every run scored not only from fans like us but also from the stalwarts of the game.

A lot has been said and written about him over the past couple of years and he himself has admitted that he has not had the greatest of the seasons with bat. The one thing that separates Dhoni from others is his humility. This can be seen in the way he credited and lauded the players including the support staff for the turnaround but we also witnessed a great gesture by him where he signed a ball and gave it to a little CSK fan girl who couldn’t stop her emotions after the legend finished off the game in style. These types of players are once in a lifetime and instead of trolling, deserves our admiration.
